Use WinMOS®300 with different Databases

external databaseWinMOS®300 works with Microsoft© Access© as database at the moment which is fully adequate to an enviroment with few emergency devices and for access to local database (database is saved locally or on a server with network access).

If the count of computers or emergency devices arised and in fact of this the number of hits to the Microsoft© Access© Database too, it may delay the whole process because this kind of data storage is aquivalent to save into a file.

Other databases initially collect the datas instead of saving it directly to a file. This procedure has the advantage that more as one computer can access to the database at the same time to work with it.

This kind of data storages is also implemented in WinMOS®300 now, which additionally allows you to use the following databases:

  • FireBird®
  • MySQL®
  • and PostgreSQL®.

Microsoft© Access© was setup as default database after installing WinMOS®300. The whole program package use the system ODBC driver from distributor. To access the databases from list above you need another ODBC driver which you’ll find in the internet (database link). You need to install the ODBC driver first before you can continue.

WinMOS300 setting

After installing the ODBC driver click in the WinMOS®300 start screen on the “Settings” button. In the following dialog you can see on the right lower position a new, already checked checkbox:
“use database Access (default)”. This shows you that Microsoft© Access© is used as database at the moment. To configure a new database connection press on the button “ODBC-Database Control Panel”.

 ODBC Data Source Administrator

Change to the tab “System-DSN” please.

By pressing the button “add” you can configure a new datasource. Select now the new installed ODBC driver from the list “create new datasource” and press on the button “ready”. The more detailed settings of parameters for the connection are not specified in this document. Information about paramters as IP-address and Port can give your IT professional to you.

Tip

You should give meaningful information to this connection (in field “Datasourcename” and “Description) as it will help you later in installation progress at WinMOS®300.

For an uncomplicated access to a FireBird® Database please set an option which is not activated on default installation of the ODBC driver.

Set Option "quoted identifiers"

Please activate the checkbox “qouted identifiers” in the lower right corner. With activation of this it is now possible to use Firebird® reserved words (for examples commands or shortcuts) as column name in relations.

Is this option not activated WinMOS®300 will not be able to save incoming background verification calls into the database.

Creating a new database (important to read).

WinMOS®300 dont create any database. You need to create the database and specify the role of every user to access the database. The database administrator will give you some help.

Settings in WinMOS®300

WinMOS300 settingsAs you are now able to use Microsoft© Access©, MySQL®, FireBird® or PostgreSQL® as database, you can activate them on WinMOS Startcenter. Open the “Global Application Settings” dialog (if it’s not already shown) by pressing the “Settings” button. Uncheck the checkbox “use database Access (default)” in the lower right corner.

Answer the followed question with “yes”.

It's absolutly not necessary to run throught the whole installation progress step by step. The complete steps which should run once at first installation can later be ignored if you do the installation the second time. In dialog “Selection of steps for transfer of database” you can set or unset some of them.

Steps which are a part of the installation progress have the following sign installation include this step and additionally this text “execute”. In contrary to that the following sign installation progress ignore this step and the text “don’t execute” exclude this step from the installation progress.

database wizardThe first step of the installation progress tries to find out what drivers are installed on your system and which you can select at second step “choose database driver“. Then WinMOS®300 looks for already configured connections with this drivers at the third step.
If no already configured connection was found or you deactivated the step “look for existing connections” you need to configure a new connection or select one from list at next step “Setup Connection”.
